Aadhaar masking is no longer optional for privacy-conscious Indians — it is the officially recommended practice. Whether you need to share your Aadhaar for hotel check-in, telecom KYC, or general identification, sending your full 12-digit Aadhaar number exposes you to identity theft risks that simply are not worth taking. This guide explains exactly how to mask your Aadhaar card online, both using our free browser-based tool and through the official UIDAI download process.
The Supreme Court’s KS Puttaswamy judgment (2017) established privacy as a fundamental right in India, directly impacting how Aadhaar data must be handled. Since then, UIDAI has introduced masked Aadhaar as an official feature precisely because the government recognizes that full Aadhaar numbers should not be circulated casually. Our tool gives you the same protection for Aadhaar cards you already have on your device.
What is Masked Aadhaar?
A masked Aadhaar card is a version of your Aadhaar that shows only the last 4 digits of your 12-digit Aadhaar number, replacing the first 8 digits with “X” or blank characters. Instead of showing 1234 5678 9012, a masked Aadhaar shows XXXX XXXX 9012.
UIDAI officially supports and encourages the use of masked Aadhaar for general verification purposes. The masked version is legally valid for most KYC scenarios where the law does not specifically require the full 12-digit number. Most private-sector organizations — including hotels, mobile operators, and employers — are required to accept it.
UIDAI’s Position: UIDAI explicitly states that masked Aadhaar “can be used in all cases where authentication or verification is not required but Aadhaar number is to be shown as proof of identity.”
How to Mask Aadhaar Card Online (Using Our Tool)
Our free Mask Aadhaar tool processes your document entirely within your browser. No file is ever uploaded to a server. Here are the four steps:
- Go to the Mask Aadhaar Tool Visit simplefiletools.com/mask-aadhar in any modern browser on your phone or computer.
- Upload Your Aadhaar File Click “Choose File to Mask” or drag and drop your Aadhaar PDF, JPG, or PNG file. Files up to 50MB are supported. Use a clear, high-resolution image for best results.
- Wait for Automatic Detection The tool uses OCR (optical character recognition) to scan your document for 12-digit Aadhaar numbers. It automatically masks the first 8 digits and leaves the last 4 visible.
- Preview and Download Review the masked preview to confirm the masking looks correct, then click “Download Masked File” to save it to your device. The file is ready to share.
Note on image quality: The OCR detection works best with clear, well-lit photographs or clean PDF scans. Very blurry or low-resolution images may not detect Aadhaar numbers reliably. If your scan quality is poor, try to get a clearer copy before masking.
How to Download Masked Aadhaar from UIDAI (Official Method)
If you want to download a fresh, government-issued masked Aadhaar directly from UIDAI, follow these steps:
- Go to uidai.gov.in Open uidai.gov.in in your browser. Make sure you are on the official government website.
- Click ‘My Aadhaar’ → ‘Download Aadhaar’ In the top navigation, find “My Aadhaar” and select “Download Aadhaar” from the dropdown menu.
- Enter Your Aadhaar Number or VID You can use your 12-digit Aadhaar number or your 16-digit Virtual ID (VID) for additional privacy. Enter the details and the CAPTCHA.
- Complete OTP Verification An OTP (One-Time Password) will be sent to your registered mobile number. Enter the OTP to verify your identity.
- Select ‘Masked Aadhaar’ Before downloading, you will see a checkbox option for “Masked Aadhaar.” Make sure this checkbox is ticked to download the masked version.
- Download and Open the PDF Download the PDF. When you open it, you will be prompted for a password (see the next section for the password format).
What is the Password for Aadhaar PDF?
The Aadhaar PDF downloaded from UIDAI is password-protected. The password follows a specific format that only you would know:
Password Format:
Example: Name “Priya Sharma”, born 1990 → Password: PRIY1990
Example: Name “Rahul Kumar”, born 1995 → Password: RAHU1995
Example: Name “Anil” (name under 4 letters), born 1988 → Password: ANIL1988
Use exactly your name as registered with UIDAI, in capital letters. If your name on Aadhaar is “M Suresh,” use the first 4 letters of how it appears — in this case “M SU” would become “M SU” which truncates to the first 4 characters. If your name has fewer than 4 characters, use all letters of your name.
Where Can You Use Masked Aadhaar?
Masked Aadhaar is widely accepted across India for everyday identification and verification:
- Hotel check-in: Hotels and guest houses are required to accept masked Aadhaar as valid ID for check-in under government regulations.
- Telecom SIM verification: Most telecom operators accept masked Aadhaar for SIM card issuance and re-verification processes.
- General KYC: Private sector KYC for financial services, insurance, and similar products typically accepts masked Aadhaar.
- Employer identity verification: Employers conducting background checks or identity verification during hiring can use masked Aadhaar.

When in doubt, start by offering your masked Aadhaar. If the organization has a genuine legal requirement for the full number, they are obligated to tell you so and specify the legal basis. Refusing a masked Aadhaar when the full number is not legally required is a violation of UIDAI guidelines.
