Frequently Asked Questions

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is an indirect tax on supply of goods and services in India. For exclusive GST: GST Amount = (Original Amount × GST Rate) / 100. For inclusive GST: GST Amount = (Total Amount × GST Rate) / (100 + GST Rate). Our calculator handles both automatically with instant results.

Current GST rates in India are: 0% (Nil-rated) for essential items like milk, eggs, and fresh produce; 5% for packaged foods, medicines, and footwear; 12% for processed foods and computers; 18% (standard rate) for most goods and services; 28% for luxury items; and 40% for specific luxury goods like high-end cars and tobacco products.

Exclusive GST means GST is added on top of the base price. For example, ₹1000 + 18% GST = ₹1180 total. Inclusive GST means GST is already included in the price. For example, ₹1180 includes ₹180 as GST (18%), with base amount being ₹1000. Use our calculator to switch between both modes instantly.

CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) apply to intra-state transactions (within same state). GST amount is split equally: 50% as CGST goes to central government, 50% as SGST goes to state government. For inter-state transactions, IGST (Integrated GST) is charged at the full rate. Our calculator automatically shows CGST and SGST breakdown.

To calculate reverse GST (extract GST from inclusive amount), use the formula: GST Amount = (Total Amount × GST Rate) / (100 + GST Rate). For example, if total is ₹1180 with 18% GST: GST = (1180 × 18) / 118 = ₹180. Base amount = ₹1180 - ₹180 = ₹1000. Simply select "Inclusive GST" in our calculator for automatic reverse calculation.
